The Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as waterfowl habitat is an agreement that aims to protect wetlands ecosystems. Wetlands ecosystems are areas whose biological, physical and chemical characteristics are influenced and determined by the presence of water. Different types of wetlands exist. They are characterized by their hydrology, water chemistry, soils, and the predominant plant species found therein. To manage and promote the wise use and conservation of wetlands the signatory parties of the aforementioned convention established a list of wetlands of international importance. The present paper reviews if the signatory party Mexico accomplishes its aim to conserve Pantanos de Centla and Marismas Nacionales, two wetlands under protection of the convention. An evaluation of the land cover distribution of the wetland vegetation and land uses from 1995 to 2014. The rate of land cover change was computed in order to see the influence of political decisions on the conservation of Marismas Nacionales and Pantanos de Centla.
The study incorporates insights from political and remote sensing science to explain the changes in the Mexican national policies as well as changes in land use and land cover changes in the sites. Some limitations for detecting wetlands vegetation have been highlighted. The most important limitation in that regard concerns the impossibility to distinguish some of the wetland vegetation in Marisma Nacionales. However, overall this study showed that remote sensing is a good tool to evaluate the land cover changes in wetlands. |
