Summary | The massive sulphide mineral deposits mined in the Iberian Pyrite Belt are the cause of an historical pollution by Acide Mine Drainage in the Odiel River. With the aim of assessing the capacity of dendrochemistry to establish a spatio-temporal record of the Odiel river contamination, tree-rings cores of 25 pines were extracted, and analyzed since 1978 by spectrometry (ICP-MS). A direct spatial relationship between the tree proximity to the river and the metal concentration in the rings was established. The river morphology showed an impact on concentrations, the higher found on a meander cutbank. A possible effect of river floods on the most distant trees was suggested. Several factors influencing the temporal concentrations variations were identified. The question of an environment acidification on the basis of a descending Mn/Al ratio was raised. A strong impact on vegetal physiology was assumed, based on the effect of the sapwood/heartwood limit on the concentrations, on the strong interactions between some elements and on physiological mobilization mechanisms of nutritive elements towards the growing rings, or translocations mechanisms of toxic elements towards the heartwood. The observation of the Pb chronology and the isotopic 206Pb / 207Pb ratio highlighted the importance of the tree sapwood penetration by atmospheric deposition. A spatial prevision of the metallic contamination distribution in the vicinity of the river can be consider. Regarding the temporal evolution, a concordance between mines history and tree-rings variations of elements concentrations could not be established. However, it was possible to visualize general consistent tendencies between sites and rings blocks for the majority of the analyzed elements. |
