Résumé
Summary Abstract: This study reveals that the citizen science campaign, in which scientists worked together with Lake Geneva fishers to obtain a lake-wide distribution in phosphorus, in comparison to the one of academic science, in which a lake-wide distribution of quagga mussels was constructed, shows higher environmental pollution, costs, and time consumption. The operating mode outside the academic structure in the citizen science scenario resulted in a slower, more expensive, and less environmentally efficient process. Academic science benefits from its well-established infrastructure and effective interdepartmental cooperation. Extended sampling durations in academic science led to significant emissions primarily due to the older motor of the university vessel. Volunteers played essential roles in both campaigns, contributing to emissions while being key for cost and time reduction. Enthusiastic student volunteers in the academic sampling phase effectively lowered emissions during the preparation stage, in contrast to the considerable emissions in citizen science due to the gradual build-up of interest among the fishers. In the academic sampling, cooperation played a central role, and its impact on emissions reduction was more pronounced. Cooperation emerges as a viable strategy to reduce both emissions and costs by aligning fishers’ practices with academic requirements and maintaining ongoing relationships with fishers for future campaigns. This cooperative approach was not as evident in the citizen science sampling, where meetings early in the project, needed to build-up an interest among the fishers and led to significant emissions.
