| Summary | This study analyzes land-use and land-cover (LULC) dynamics in the Mbour department, located in the Thiès region of Senegal, using Sentinel-2 imagery processed on Google Earth Engine. A 53-band phenological image combining seasonal spectral medians, monthly NDVI profiles, and phenological metrics is constructed for two periods (2018–2019 and 2024–2025) and serves as a common basis for three classification approaches: an unsupervised pixel-based classification (K-Means), an object-oriented approach (SNIC), and a supervised Random Forest classification. The results indicate an overall accuracy of 80.8% and 81.9% for the two periods (Kappa 0.78 and 0.79). Mapping performance varies depending on the spectral separability of the classes. Water, mangroves, and built-up areas are reliably identified, whereas the agro-pastoral continuum (rainfed crops, shrubs, and herbaceous vegetation) faces a fundamental limit to spectral separability. Change analysis through post-classification comparison reveals an expansion of built-up areas and a decline in rainfed crops. |
