Summary In a vision of sustainable development, NGOs, international agencies as well as developing countries look for unexpensive GIS (Geographic Information System) solutions for the management of their goods and natural resources. Subsequent to the widespread use of GIS, many projects of GIS open sources have been developed in the last decade to reach high potentials. Thus, the community of interested users and developers is increasing, which should be a guarantee of quality and responsiveness. This report proposes an overview of the actual options available in term of open source GIS. It tries to distinguish different kind of user to determinate which software are adapted to a particular profile of user. The main goal of this document is to realize an assessment of open source GIS software, to list an inventory of the best GIS solutions available on the internet and to perform a set of tests for all the software selected, in order to evaluate their strength and weakness as well as their potentiality. A synthesis table gives a summary of all the tests that have been done, and functionalities that the software have with a small evaluation.
