| Résumé | We are living through the dual crises of biodiversity loss and climate change. Since 1970, the populations of wild animals have reduced by 69%, originating a sixth mass extinction event. We are intruding always more into wildlife habitats, which drives emerging zoonotic diseases such as COVID-19. All of these global problems are caused by humans, initiating a new geological epoch that geologists are calling Anthropocene, and often these problems arise from the way we have been treating animals and the natural environment. There have been efforts to try to preserve wildlife worldwide, at a national and international level, in an attempt to conserve species for human use as well as protect species for their own sake. This study explores the evolution of international wildlife law and its effectiveness in conserving and protecting species. International wildlife law stands within the convergence of international environmental law and animal law, touching a wide range of topics including endangered species protection, international illegal wildlife trade and animal welfare. With a truly interdisciplinary approach, this master thesis highlights the potential central role international wildlife law has in helping to tackle biodiversity loss and climate change, but also reduce the risks of emerging zoonotic diseases and help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This interdisciplinary thesis puts together legal, scientific, philosophical, economic and social topics together that, just like wildlife, slither, fly, run and creep across the pages and joins a new wave of studies trying to push this evolving and ever-more important discipline to a better place. A place where wildlife, humans, and future generations are better off. |
